Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make me beautiful?

No. You are beautiful.
I can capture some digital images of your beautiful self for you to have and use and show and share what you looked like in that moment on that day forever and ever.

What should I plan to wear?

"Wear the simplest thing you can....  It's either a photo of your face or of your clothes, but it can't be both." -Diana Vreeland, via Andrew Solomon at The Moth.

For headshots, I recommend a simple shirt with a nice texture and a flattering neckline that is a solid color or that has a small, nondescript print. There are several schools of thought on this; if you like to research, this article provides good insight and this photographer has a lovely collection of models with different looks.

Of course, if we schedule a Cosplay session, you should wear all of the pieces of your well-crafted, complex costume.

how and when will I get my photos after a session?

Digitally and Quickly.
Proof galleries will be available online within 24 hours of the session. Typically, you will receive an email to a password-protected gallery of proofs so that you may peruse your looks and choose which photo(s) you would like to have retouched. Retouched photos will be sent via email within five business days.

Print-ready galleries will be available online within a week of the session. Depending on our agreement, you will be given a credit for the number of full-resolution digital photo files your package includes, or you will have access to purchase digital photo files and prints from within your gallery.

Please let me know in advance if you have any major technical difficulties, so that I might work with you to provide the kind of service you need.

What Am I allowed to do with my photos?

Almost anything you want.
Download a sample of my standard contract for all the legal bits and pieces, but here are the basics:

You get the rights to use photos for your needs, and I retain the rights to use photos to promote my business. I will never sell photos to advertisers or stock photography companies without a conversation and contract.

You MAY:
  • Make prints (Walgreens has the least expensive 8x10 options)
  • Share to social media (please tag @raypho on Facebook!)
  • Send digital photo files or prints to friends and family
  • Upload and post photos to your personal website
  • Edit, alter, and/or adjust to re-mix into a new artistic project
  • Negotiate

You MAY NOT:
  • Sell RayPho photos for money - including to advertising and stock photography organizations
  • Prohibit me from using your photo to promote my business

If you have other questions about what's ok and what's not, please ask!

I'm a Tech Nerd; what's your equipment?

Canon EOS 6D + EF 100mm f/2.8 Lens
For headshots, I typically stick with the 100mm lens, but I do have other lenses that I use for other applications.

There is quite a bit of interesting discussion about what focal length is "best" for what application, and several sites have compared portraits by focal length. If you're interested, check out this photographer's blog.
